This Unprecedented Low Voter Turnout Will Soon Be Declared a High Level of Democracy, Gharamyan Says

The former Secretary of the Artsakh Security Council, Arshavir Gharamyan, has commented on the local elections in Yerevan: “In light of the unprecedentedly low voter turnout in the Yerevan municipal elections, someone will soon declare it an achievement and attribute it to the unprecedented 'high' level of democracy in Armenia...” he wrote.

It is worth mentioning that the Chairman of the Central Election Commission, Vahagn Hovakimyan, published the number of voters who participated in the election. According to this data, out of 824,250 registered voters, 234,553 voted, which is only 28.46% of the total. “This is the lowest participation rate in Yerevan’s history. I can’t remember such a low figure,” Hovakimyan noted. It should be emphasized that in the 2018 Yerevan council elections, 43.65% of voters participated, totaling 370,323 people.
