US Proposes Opening Military Base in Georgia: Embassy Issues Statement

The US embassy and the Ministry of Defense of Georgia today denied claims that the United States proposed to open a military base in Georgia. This was reported by News Georgia.

“US-Georgia defense relations have been based and continue to be based on strengthening interoperability and supporting Georgia to deter further aggression and defend its sovereign territory, which better prepares Georgia for NATO membership. To clarify information circulated in the media: the US has not proposed to establish an American military base in Georgia,” the embassy's statement said.

The topic began to be discussed after Mtavari TV speculated that the issue was addressed two years ago during Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin’s visit to Georgia, but the Georgian side responded negatively.
