Moldovan President Mircea Snegur Passes Away at 82
Moldovan President Mircea Snegur has passed away at the age of 82. This was reported by Konstantin Tampiza, a member of the republic's first parliament and former deputy prime minister.
Snegur will be buried next to his wife at the central cemetery in Chișinău.
Mircea Snegur held the office of President of Moldova from September 3, 1990, until January 15, 1997. He was born on January 17, 1940, in the village of Trifănești, Soroca County, Romania. He graduated from the Chișinău Agricultural Institute and worked in the agricultural sector, also holding various administrative positions in the northern regions of Moldova.
In 2000, he was awarded the Order of the Republic and received honorary doctorates from Chișinău Agricultural University (1996), Ankara University (1996), and the Moldova International Free University (2001).
