Brazil's President Does Not Guarantee Putin Will Not Be Arrested If He Visits the Country
Mariam Z.
Brazilian President Lula da Silva has withdrawn his previous assurances that Vladimir Putin would not be arrested under an International Criminal Court (ICC) order if he attends the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro. While Brazil acknowledges the ICC's jurisdiction, President da Silva had stated over the weekend to Indian media outlet Firstpost that as long as he is the President of Brazil, Putin would never be arrested in his country.
However, on Monday, his position changed: 'I don't know whether the Brazilian justice system will detain him. It is up to the judicial system, not the government,' said the Brazilian president.
