How Much Money Will the UK Provide Ukraine to Purchase Nuclear Fuel?
The United Kingdom will be able to provide Ukraine with £192 million (approximately $244 million) to purchase nuclear fuel for its nuclear power plants, including from British companies. This was announced to Reuters by the UK Secretary of State for Energy, Grant Shapps, during his visit to Kyiv.
“This guarantee that we will provide should help Ukraine achieve the goal of… not receiving its nuclear fuel from Russia in the future,” Shapps said. According to him, the fuel will also be procured from British companies. The minister specified that one of the suppliers will be the partially British Urenco consortium, headquartered in London.
It is noteworthy that Ukraine currently controls 3 of its 4 operational nuclear power plants. The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant has been under Russian control since March of last year. In March of this year, the press service of Ukraine's Ministry of Energy announced that the country intends to establish its own production of nuclear fuel for power plants within three years, in order to replace Russian imports, including in the European market.
