Resistance Will Exist Regardless of Everything: Ruben Vardanyan on 3 Elements That Must Unite

Social and political figure, coordinator of the "Front for Security and Development of Artsakh," Ruben Vardanyan, gave an interview to the international publication Caucasus Watch, presenting the situation in and around Artsakh and the region.

When asked whether there is a presumption in his words that they are preparing for resistance—even with a scenario of violence, Ruben Vardanyan responded: "Absolutely, yes. There will be resistance, regardless of everything. And here it is worth mentioning one circumstance: when the message of resistance is clear, and the nation stands behind it, opportunities for unexpected support arise. Once we clearly understand our intention to fight for our rights, I am convinced that we will be able to take advantage of the support opportunities. We should not only look at the West or Russia. We need to work with all sides, including the East, and ensure that these cooperative relationships and alliances serve our interests as much as possible. By being decisive in our intention to fight for our rights, I believe we can have these opportunities for support. Under certain circumstances, adversaries may even cooperate, and we can strive to become such a place."

He also noted: "Thus, there are three elements that must unite. First, the desire to resist and fight for our rights must be articulated more clearly—to unify our internal front and to position ourselves more distinctly in the world. Second, we must be ready for a transformation of the global status quo and be prepared to face new threats and seize new opportunities. Third, we must start speaking with Azerbaijan, even if we are not negotiating with them. It is essential to make Azerbaijan understand that they are playing their 'strong hand' too much. President Aliyev is trying to maximize his short-term benefits without thinking about the long-term perspective. Who knows what will happen 20 years from now? A country that is exclusively dependent on oil and gas revenues may soon face a multi-faceted crisis. Without focusing too much on this topic, I believe he is not wisely utilizing his current power."
