Russia Represents an ‘Economic Dwarf’: Borrell

Russia represents an ‘economic dwarf’ and is akin to a ‘gas station whose owner has an atomic bomb.’ This was stated by Josep Borrell, the head of the European Union’s foreign policy, in an interview with El Pais.

According to him, Russia cannot be compared to China, which is a ‘real geopolitical player.’ ‘It is Russia, not China, that poses a threat to European security,’ emphasized the chief diplomat.

In his view, Vladimir Putin is ‘sacrificing his army and population’ for his ‘survival,’ as the strategic perspective on the Russian invasion of Ukraine has failed. ‘Putin wanted a quick war, but it has already lasted 18 months, and he is on the defensive. His project for rapid conquest has turned into a complete fiasco. Russia has already paid a huge price in terms of material and human resources; it has lost 2,000 tanks, more than all the armies of Europe combined,’ Borrell stated.
