Armenian Wrestler Defeats Azerbaijani at U20 Greco-Roman Wrestling World Championships

The U20 Greco-Roman Wrestling World Championships have kicked off today in Amman, Jordan. On the first day of competition, representatives from Armenia will contest in five weight categories.

In his first match, Yurik Hovhayan, competing in the 63 kg weight class, achieved a decisive victory against Azerbaijani fighter Faraiim Mustafayev, winning by equal points due to technical advantages. Hovhayan led the first round 7-0, but the Azerbaijani wrestler equalized in the second round. However, thanks to higher points for technical moves, the Armenian wrestler emerged victorious.

In the round of 16, Hovhayan faced Croatian Matej Rebič, winning the match and advancing to the quarterfinals.

In the 87 kg weight class, Vigen Nazaryan has already secured two victories. He first defeated Japanese Daiise Ishoni, and then won his second match against Kazakhstan's Nurasil Amanali with a score of 3-1. In the quarterfinals, Nazaryan will compete against compatriot David Andreasian, representing Russia.

It is worth noting that the World Championships for freestyle wrestlers under 20 years commenced on August 15. Armenia's first medal was secured by Edik Harutyunyan in the 57 kg weight class, who defeated Azerbaijani Ruslan Abdulayev.
