Ukraine May Join NATO by Ceding Territories to Russia
The head of NATO's Secretary General Office, Stian Jensen, does not rule out the possibility that Ukraine could become a member of the alliance in exchange for ceding part of its territory to Russia. His remarks were quoted by RIA Novosti, referencing the Verdens Gang publication.
"I think one of the solutions could be that Ukraine gives up territory and, in return, becomes a NATO member," Jensen stated.
In response to a question from the newspaper on whether NATO believes Ukraine should cede territory to achieve peace with Russia and future membership in NATO, Jensen noted that discussions about the possible status after the conflict are already ongoing and that the question of transferring territories to Russia has been raised.
"I’m not saying that this has to be the case. But this is probably a possible solution," Jensen remarked.
