Former Iranian President Hassan Rouhani Accused of Financial Crimes
The special prosecutor's office for clergy affairs in Iran is investigating former President Hassan Rouhani for illegal transactions in the currency exchange market. This was announced by Masoud Sateishi, a representative of the Iranian judicial system.
"He is a cleric; cases have been opened against him in the special prosecutor's office for clergy affairs," Sateishi said in response to questions about possible violations by Rouhani in stock market and currency transactions. The Iranian judicial authority's spokesperson's remarks were quoted by the Mehr news agency.
Sateishi also noted that the case has been opened against Rouhani in connection with alleged currency fraud and interference in Iran's stock market.
Hassan Rouhani served as the President of Iran from August 2013 to August 2021. He held the position for two terms. From December 2017 to January 2018, widespread anti-government protests took place in Iran, during which demonstrators expressed dissatisfaction, particularly with Rouhani's presidency.
In August 2021, a group of Iranian parliamentarians filed a lawsuit, claiming that Hassan Rouhani failed to fulfill his obligations. The parliamentarians specifically pointed out that during Rouhani's presidency, there was a collapse in the stock market, causing many investors to lose a significant portion of their assets.
