Rebels in Niger Ready to Negotiate with ECOWAS
The leader of Niger's ruling National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland (CNSP), General Abdourahamane Tchiani, has given the "green light" to begin negotiations with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). This was reported by Al Jazeera, citing the new Prime Minister of the country, Lamine Zeine Ali Mahamane.
According to him, Niger's new leadership is looking "optimistically" towards the start of negotiations with representatives of the regional alliance in the coming days.
Niger's military announced on national television at the end of July that they had removed President Mohamed Bazoum from power. Leaders from most Western countries, along with the regional organization ECOWAS, condemned the coup.
