Azerbaijani Opposition Demands Sanctions Against Aliyev's Regime
The Azerbaijani opposition party "People's Front" calls on the international community to impose sanctions on Aliyev's regime for gross human rights violations.
"Ilham Aliyev's regime stubbornly wants to turn Azerbaijan into a country like North Korea, and the international community must prevent this," the political party asserts against the backdrop of a new wave of arrests in Azerbaijan.
According to independent sources, a group of representatives from independent trade unions has been arrested recently due to their protests against fines imposed on messengers. The detainees have been charged by Azerbaijani law enforcement with the articles related to "acquiring, holding, and selling drugs." The opposition insists that the allegations against the arrested activists are fabricated.
"The regime of Ilham Aliyev, known for its harsh authoritarianism and repressive tendencies, considers any organization and protest that is beyond its control a major threat," claims the "People's Front," which has nearly a dozen activists behind bars.
