Israeli Prominent Figures Urge President to Prevent Humanitarian Disaster in Artsakh

A group of notable Israeli academics, journalists, intellectuals, rabbis, artists, businessmen, and activists has written a letter to Israeli President Isaac Herzog, requesting his intervention to prevent a severe humanitarian crisis in Nagorno-Karabakh. This was reported by the Armenian Embassy in Israel, as noted by “News”.

They expressed deep concern regarding the evident and real threat of a serious humanitarian crisis affecting 120,000 people in Nagorno-Karabakh.

“The State of Israel maintains close ties with Azerbaijan—a country responsible for this crisis and capable of resolving it. These connections obligate the State of Israel to adopt a clear position rather than remain inactive,” the letter states.

The group added that Azerbaijan's blockade of the Lachin Corridor violates the tripartite declaration signed with Armenia in November 2020 under Russian mediation.

The letter indicates that relations between Israel and Azerbaijan have significantly improved recently, largely due to the substantial military support that Israel provides to Azerbaijan, which has become a decisive factor in military operations in the autumn of 2020.

“The assistance provided by Israel means that we bear special responsibility not to remain bystanders, and it gives us a significant opportunity to have a positive impact. We cannot remain silent, especially in light of our historical and multifaceted connection with the Armenian people. Both Jewish and Armenian histories bear witness to political justifications used to rationalize inaction and apathy in the face of lives hanging by a thread,” the letter states.

The Israeli figures have urged the President to personally address their Azerbaijani counterparts and demand the immediate lifting of the blockade of the Lachin Corridor.

“This is not a request to take any side in the ongoing conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia, but rather a humanitarian call to save lives at risk and ensure basic freedom of movement and adequate resources for living,” the letter concludes.
