The national civil protection service has reported that on Tuesday approximately 1000 firefighters, 320 vehicles, and 9 aircraft were involved in firefighting efforts. To date, around 7000 hectares have been burned. The wildfires were caused by high temperatures.
It has been noted that on Monday in Santarem, located about 80 kilometers (50 miles) north-east of the capital Lisbon, the year’s highest temperature reached 46.4 C (115.5 F). From Tuesday onwards, temperatures in the republic are expected to decrease, though they will generally remain above 30 C.
