ECOWAS, UN, and African Union Delegations Fail to Cross Niger Border
Delegations from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the United Nations, and the African Union have been unable to cross the border into Niger due to restrictions imposed by the current leadership of the country. The community continues its efforts to allegedly 'restore constitutional order' within the nation.
'In the current context of public outrage and protests, it is impossible to welcome this delegation under the necessary conditions of calm and security, following the sanctions imposed by ECOWAS,' stated the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a letter to the ECOWAS office in Niamey.
Niger has not provided clearer reasons for the refusal. Previously, ECOWAS defense ministers had developed a plan for military intervention in Niger, but have postponed any operations due to insufficient preparation time.
