EU Suspends All Cooperation with Niger, Borrell States

The European Union (EU) has suspended all forms of cooperation with Niger. This was announced by EU Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Representative Josep Borrell. The information was reported by Interfax.

“We have immediately halted any cooperation with Niger at this stage. Let me clarify that this also includes cooperation related to migration flows (...). Yes, all activities are now suspended—financial support, civilian missions, and cooperation on security issues,” the EU representative stated.

Borrell indicated that Brussels supports all actions by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to restore the ousted President Mohamed Bazoum to power and does not recognize the military coup. He emphasized that the upcoming meeting of the regional organization’s leaders will be “crucial.”

“We are not working with the current illegal authorities in Niger,” he added.

“This is a key player in the region. Whatever ECOWAS’s decision may be, it will be implemented. We will help find a solution,” said the head of European diplomacy in response to questions about the prospects of military intervention in Niger.

It should be noted that a military coup took place in Niger at the end of July.
