Russian Foreign Ministry: Rapid Peace Agreement Between Baku and Yerevan Will Lead to New Conflicts
The attempt to hastily conclude a peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia will result in new conflicts in the future. This was stated by Denis Gonchar, the director of the Fourth Department for the Commonwealth of Independent States at the Russian Foreign Ministry, in an interview with TASS.
According to Gonchar, when signing a peace agreement, the priority should not be speed, but rather balanced and mutually acceptable decisions. “There are regular statements from the West that Baku and Yerevan can sign a peace agreement ‘in the coming weeks or months.’ The deadlines for signing should be determined by the negotiating parties themselves. The mediators' task is not to accelerate the negotiation process but to facilitate achieving solid, long-term agreements,” he noted.
Gonchar emphasized that agreements should be based on high-level statements from Russia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan, as well as on mechanisms operating on that basis.
