VIDEO: We Cannot Expect Fair Processes in the Case of Vagif Khachatryan, Says Siranush Sahakyan
This incident is hard to fit within the logic of international law. In an interview with the Media Center on the topic "The Kidnapping of Vagif Khachatryan by Azerbaijan: A Gross Violation of Human Rights - What Measures Should Be Taken," Siranush Sahakyan, the representative of Armenian prisoners of war at the ECHR, stated:
“International law certainly has mechanisms for cooperation in the criminal field and contributes significantly to ensuring that criminals stand before justice and prevents their escape from justice. For this, we have extradition and transfer mechanisms in international law, which should be addressed by the states. In other words, if Azerbaijan believed that Vagif Khachatryan was a criminal, that criminal could have been brought under territorial jurisdiction through international criminal law cooperation with the authorities of Armenia, Artsakh, Russia, and why not, through collaboration with Interpol,” she said.
“We cannot expect fair processes in the case of Vagif Khachatryan, because he was initially brought under the jurisdiction of Azerbaijan in violation of the law and fundamental guarantees of human rights,” she noted.
