Donald Trump Charged on Four Counts
Former U.S. President Donald Trump was formally charged on Tuesday with a crime against the United States and its citizens for attempting to fraudulently overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. The New York Times reports that the former leader has been charged with four counts.
Each of the first two counts could carry a penalty of up to five years in prison, while the last could result in up to 20 years, the paper notes.
The counts include conspiracy to defraud the United States, conspiracy to obstruct official proceedings, and an article related to obstruction of official proceedings, as well as conspiracy to violate citizens' rights.
Special prosecutor Jack Smith, who managed the investigation into the events of January 6, 2021, has charged Trump on four counts. This marks the third and most serious criminal charge brought against Trump, who is seeking re-election to the presidency next year.
