I Saw with My Own Eyes How the Russian Army's Unit Base in Meghri Was Bombarded – Tonoyan
The former Minister of Defense of Armenia, Davit Tonoyan, recounted during a session of the 44-day commission how the Russian army's unit base in Meghri came under fire. He elaborated on the circumstances of his presence in Meghri during the days of the war.
According to Tonoyan, at that time, there were already quite a significant number of casualties just 2-3 kilometers away from the state border of Armenia. The community leader of Meghri and the commander of the battalion were wounded, and a special command for the southern region was being established, which was headed today by General Gyozalyan.
Tonoyan believes that his presence in Meghri as Minister of Defense had a serious impact on both the armed forces and the local population. “At that time, I saw with my own eyes how the Russian army's unit base in Meghri was bombarded. I filmed it myself. There were flags being raised and taken down, and forces being transferred. In any case, I also had another function—to have a clearly coordinated cooperation with the Russian border forces, which was established and was a very serious collaboration, for which I am very grateful. It turned out that only the Russian border forces' unit was in a very accessible area for conducting direct military operations,” he emphasized.
According to Tonoyan, he was recalled from Meghri by the Prime Minister after assessing the situation there.
