Niger to Halt Gold and Uranium Exports to France

Niger has decided to stop exporting gold and uranium to France, reports Sky News Arabia.

Niger is one of France's strongest allies in the Sahel and Sahara regions and a major source of uranium, which is used for electricity production for millions of families in the country.

In 2021, Niger accounted for almost 25% of uranium supplies to EU member states. France has been mining uranium in Niger since 1970. In 2020, about 35% of uranium used in French reactors came from Niger.

Earlier, mass protests were held in Niger against France and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
