I Strongly Condemn the Decision to Hand Over Sukhum Airport to Russia: Zurabishvili
The President of Georgia, Salome Zurabishvili, has condemned the agreement between Abkhazia and Russia regarding the reconstruction of Sukhum Airport.
“I strongly condemn and protest the decision to hand over the strategic facility, Sukhum Airport, to Russia,” she stated.
On Wednesday, the Parliament of Abkhazia ratified the agreement with the Government of the Russian Federation concerning the restoration and further operation of Sukhum International Airport by a legal entity of Russia under an investment program. The agreement is set to last for 49 years, with a special tax regime for the investor lasting up to 25 years.
The airport, located 18 km from the capital of Abkhazia, has been non-operational since the end of the Georgian-Abkhaz conflict.
