The Armenian Prosecutor's Office Removes Section on Sumgait and Maragha Genocides from Its Website

The official website of the Armenian Prosecutor's Office has removed the section on Sumgait, which contained valuable and factual materials about Azerbaijani crimes against humanity. This was reported by ‘Patsinfo’.

The section was opened back in 2010 and included materials on criminal cases initiated concerning the massacres against Armenians that occurred in Soviet Azerbaijan at the end of the 1980s and the beginning of the 1990s in Nagorno-Karabakh.

The 'Sumgait' page had four sections, subdivided according to the types of crimes committed and the administrative regions involved. Specifically, the 'Sumgait' section included eyewitness testimonies regarding killings, rapes, violence, and thefts, as well as statements from victims and their legal successors. The 'Documents' section featured declassified reports summarizing the materials of the criminal cases. In the 'Nagorno-Karabakh' section, the criminal case materials were posted by administrative units, including materials related to the Maragha genocide.

At that time, the Prosecutor's Office had digitized the criminal case materials in cooperation with the 'Initiative for Preventing Intolerance' NGO, and participation in the digitization efforts was on a voluntary basis. The section was created based on the electronic archive, meaning it contained exclusively factual evidence to prevent the falsification and concealment of crimes against humanity.

The article states: 'The Sumgait section has been removed from the Prosecutor's Office website. To clarify the reasons for the removal of such important and extensive historical work from the official website, the media contacted the Press and Public Relations Department of the Prosecutor's Office, where they initially reacted with surprise, then requested time to find out whether such information exists on the website or not. Later, they explained that due to technical work related to the website's functionality, the section's materials are currently unavailable, assuring that after the completion of the website's modernization efforts, the section summarizing eyewitness accounts of the Sumgait and Maragha genocides will be accessible to website visitors with the full volume of information.'
