US Nuclear Submarine Arrives in South Korea

For the first time in nearly 40 years, an American nuclear ballistic missile submarine docked in South Korea on July 18, according to Reuters, citing Kurt Campbell, the U.S. administration's coordinator for the Indo-Pacific region.

The submarine arrived at the port of Busan. The last time an American nuclear submarine visited South Korean waters was in the 1980s.

Campbell stated that the submarine's visit is a "sign of America's commitment to the defense of South Korea," adding that the U.S. aims to ensure a strong and permanent nuclear deterrent force. It is noted that the deployment of the nuclear submarine is intended to counter North Korea.

Previously, the United States and South Korea had signed an agreement regarding this deployment.
