Record High Temperatures Recorded in France and Italy
Record high temperatures have been registered in southern France on Tuesday, according to the French meteorological service. In the Ariège department, temperatures soared to 40.6 degrees Celsius for the first time in the history of meteorological observations. A similar record high was noted in the town of Renno in Corsica, where the temperature reached 38.3 degrees Celsius.
Records have also been set in Italy. On Tuesday, temperatures in Rome reached 41.8 degrees Celsius, surpassing the previous year’s record of 40.7 degrees Celsius recorded in June.
According to European media reports, a temperature record has also been established in Catalonia, Spain, where temperatures spiked above 45 degrees Celsius. The previous record was set at 43.8 degrees Celsius in June 2019.
Earlier, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) had warned that temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius would persist in many regions around the world for several days. “In North America, Asia, North Africa, and the Mediterranean, temperatures this week are expected to exceed 40 degrees Celsius,” stated the WMO announcement.
