Armenia's Position Remains Unchanged: Stepanakert Must Negotiate with Baku, Says MP
The situation in Nagorno-Karabakh is worsening day by day, but Armenia's role, according to parliamentary diplomacy, is limited to raising these issues. This was stated today, July 14, during a press conference in the parliament by the Chairman of the National Assembly's Standing Committee on Foreign Relations, Sargis Khandanyan.
He emphasized that Armenia's position is unchanged regarding the rights and security of the Armenian population of Nagorno-Karabakh, asserting that Stepanakert must negotiate with Baku.
“Our position is unchanged regarding the protection of the rights and security of the Armenian population of Nagorno-Karabakh. We believe there should be a dialogue between representatives of Nagorno-Karabakh and Baku. The issues concerning the rights and security of the Armenian population in Nagorno-Karabakh must be discussed within this framework to ensure international visibility,” Khandanyan stated.
He pointed out that the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh is becoming increasingly dire, and they continuously address this in all parliamentary contacts. However, he also emphasized that Armenia's role is only to raise these concerns through parliamentary diplomacy.
“Our role should be to try to increase pressure on Azerbaijan and achieve relevant decisions in various platforms, such as the UN Security Council, which would also imply certain actions. For example, a broader international presence in Nagorno-Karabakh, which would more clearly and reliably protect the rights of Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh,” Khandanyan added.
Khandanyan underscored the need to uphold the provisions of the November 9 statement and to execute the ruling of the International Court of Justice. According to the deputy, clear actions are required from international partners, and this perception is already present among them.
