Turkish Seismologist Predicts 7-Magnitude Earthquake in Istanbul and Marmara

Seismology professor and member of the Istanbul City Council's Earthquake Scientific Advisory Board, Haluk Eyidoğan, has predicted a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7 in Istanbul and the Marmara region. This was reported by RIA Novosti.

“If the fault activates in the Sea of Marmara, a powerful earthquake will occur,” Eyidoğan said. According to him, the probability of such an earthquake happening by 2030 is approximately 50%, and the entire Turkey will feel the potential economic repercussions of the disaster.

It is noted that this conclusion was made based on a study of the past 2,000 years of seismic activity in the region, as well as an analysis of geophysical and seismic research results. In April, the number of casualties from the earthquake that struck southeastern Turkey on February 6 has reached 50,783. Furthermore, the damage caused to the country's industrial enterprises from earthquakes has been estimated at 9 billion dollars.
