Relatives of Victims in ‘Surmalu’ Explosion Case Demand 314 Million Dram Compensation
Relatives of two citizens who died in the ‘Surmalu’ shopping center explosion have filed a claim for 314 million dram in material and non-material damages with the investigating agency, the National Security Service’s investigative department. They demand that the responsible parties from the shopping center, officials, and the state pay them 100 million dram each for the loss of their loved ones and 114 million dram for property damages. This was reported by ‘Hetq’.
It is noteworthy that the explosion occurred on August 14, 2022, resulting in the deaths of 15 individuals, with one person still considered missing. Prior to that, a fire occurred in the shopping center premises on April 6, 2021. Both incidents resulted in criminal cases, which were amalgamated under the reasoning of investigative efficiency and are currently under the jurisdiction of the NSS.
‘Hetq’ had previously reported that both the victims and their lawyers expressed dissatisfaction over the improper handling of the initiated criminal case. Furthermore, representatives of law enforcement agencies have been accused of having biased positions. For over a year, lawyers have been unable to impose a freeze on the assets of ‘Yerevan Canned Food Factory’ LLC, which operates the ‘Surmalu’ shopping center.
