Over 10 Senior Military Officers Detained Alongside Surovikin, WSJ
At least 13 senior Russian military officers have been detained for questioning following the rebellion led by Yevgeny Prigozhin, the founder of the Wagner private military company, The Wall Street Journal reports, citing sources.
The Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation (FSB) began the arrests just hours after Prigozhin’s uprising, according to the publication's informants. The arrests are being carried out with the aim of 'cleaning up the ranks,' one source stated. According to the report, around 15 Russian officers have already been removed from service.
Among those detained by the FSB is General Sergey Surovikin, commander of the Russian Aerospace Forces and deputy commander of Russian troops in Ukraine, sources for WSJ report. They indicated that the general is currently under detention in Moscow, but not in an investigative isolation facility, and has been questioned multiple times.
One informant claimed that Surovikin was aware of the plans for the rebellion but did not participate. No charges have been brought against Surovikin. Sources note that the general could be released as soon as Russian President Vladimir Putin decides how to respond to the consequences of the rebellion.
