Number of Displaced People Worldwide Reaches Record High: New Data from the UN
The number of displaced people worldwide has reached a record high of 110 million. This was reported by Al Jazeera, citing a report published by the UN.
“This is a record figure, with the wars in Ukraine and Sudan forcing millions to leave their homes. Compared to last year, the number has increased by more than 19 million, the largest increase in history,” the UN report states.
The total number of refugees worldwide has grown by a record 35%, driven by the Russia-Ukraine conflict and the presence of Afghan military personnel in Iran and Pakistan.
According to the report, this year the largest influx of refugees has been reported from Pakistan (28,500 people left the country), Egypt (27,300), and Libya (20,200).
Regarding Syrian refugees, it is reported that approximately 51,300 citizens have returned to Syria within a year, an increase of 14,800 compared to 2021 data. Notably, two-thirds of these refugees returned from Turkey. Turkey continues to be the country hosting the largest number of refugees in the world, with 3.6 million refugees.
The report also notes that the flow of refugees is not expected to slow down in 2023.
