UN Condemns Burning of Quran and Other Holy Books, Adopts Resolution

The UN Human Rights Council has adopted a resolution condemning acts of burning holy books. This was reported by Al Jazeera.

The situation escalated in Sweden following the desecration of a Muslim holy book. The resolution states: "The Council condemns and firmly rejects the recent public and deliberate acts of desecration of the Holy Quran and emphasizes the need to hold accountable those responsible for these acts of religious hatred in line with state obligations arising from international human rights law." A total of 28 representatives voted in favor, while 12 opposed and 7 abstained.

The UN calls on states to review their national laws, policies, and legal frameworks to identify gaps that might hinder the prosecution of incitement to hatred on religious grounds or acts that provoke discrimination, hostility, and violence.
