G7 Guarantees for Ukraine Will Be an Aggression Against Russia's Security: Peskov

The provision of security guarantees to Ukraine by the G7 countries will constitute an aggression against Russia's security and is fraught with quite negative consequences in the short term. This was stated by Dmitry Peskov, the press secretary of the Russian president. His words were quoted by Interfax.

“We have a very negative attitude towards the topic of NATO membership for Ukraine. This topic is directly related to the statements made that the 'G7' countries will provide security guarantees to Ukraine. We consider this wrong and potentially extremely dangerous because, when providing any guarantees to Ukraine, these countries are essentially ignoring the inviolable principles of international security. That is, by providing security guarantees to Ukraine, they are committing an aggression against Russia's security. This is impossible. And this is fraught with quite negative consequences in the medium, long-term, and even short-term,” Peskov said.

According to him, voices from “certain political figures in these countries” are being heard in Moscow, who understand the dangers of such decisions. “We hope that these voices will be audible, and wisdom will prevail. Otherwise, by making such decisions, these countries actually make Europe much more dangerous for many years to come. And of course, they are doing harm to us, which we will take into account and act accordingly,” Peskov stated.

It should be noted that the leaders of NATO member countries have confirmed a multi-year support package for Ukraine, consisting of three elements. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg noted that the package includes a multi-year assistance program to achieve compatibility with NATO, the establishment of a NATO-Ukraine council, and the cancellation of conditions for the execution of the action plan on membership issues, which will reduce the membership process from two stages to one. According to the Secretary General, the leaders of the alliance have confirmed that Ukraine will become a NATO member when the allies decide that the conditions are met.
