Video: NATO Summit Kicks Off in Vilnius
The two-day NATO summit has commenced in Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, where leaders from several member countries have already arrived. This was reported by the BBC.
The main topic of discussion among the 31 NATO member countries will be Ukraine, which seeks to become a member of the alliance but cannot do so while military operations launched by Russia continue in the country.
According to NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, allies will send a clear, positive message to Ukraine regarding membership in the alliance. He emphasized that at some point, Ukraine will become a NATO member.
In the lead-up to the summit, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky pleaded for security guarantees from the 31 NATO members, while also stressing that the ultimate goal is to join the alliance.
The first meeting of the NATO-Ukraine Council is scheduled for July 12.
Before the Vilnius summit, it was also announced that Turkey would ratify Sweden's application for NATO membership.
