Teen Weightlifter Emma Poghosyan Sets Record at European Youth Championship
The European Championship for weightlifting among M15 and M17 athletes is nearing its conclusion in Chisinau. Armenia has already won 9 medals in total, including 5 gold medals.
Among the representatives of Armenia, 16-year-old Emma Poghosyan became a double champion of the youth European Championship on July 9. Competing in the 81 kg weight class, Emma clinched a gold medal with a combined lift of 225 kg (96+129 kg). In the snatch and clean and jerk events, the Armenian athlete also earned small gold medals.
It is noteworthy that by lifting 129 kg over her head in the clean and jerk event, Emma Poghosyan set a European record for athletes under 17 years old.
The Armenian athlete was also the winner of the European youth championship in 2022, competing in the under 15 category.
Another gold medal for Armenia was secured by Valerik Movsesyan in the 89 kg weight class, who became the champion with a total lift of 305 kg. Movsesyan lifted 145 kg in the snatch and 160 kg in the clean and jerk, earning additional small gold medals in individual events.
Anna Amroyan also contributed to Armenia's gold medal tally, winning the 76 kg weight class in the under 17 competition with a combined lift of 209 kg (92+117 kg). She too secured small gold medals in the snatch and clean and jerk events.
Earlier, 81 kg weightlifter Hovhannes Ghahramanyan had won a silver medal with a total of 312 kg (140+172 kg), while Alina Sukiasyan earned a bronze medal in the women's 71 kg category with a total lift of 185 kg (85+100 kg).
Earlier in the competition, the youth championship title was also won by Zhora Grigoryan (61 kg) and Seryozha Barseghyan (67 kg), while Karlen Davtyan (49 kg) and Yughaber Amroyan (40 kg) claimed bronze medals.
On the final competition day today, July 10, Rustam Saharyan, Ashot Margaryan (both 102 kg), and Gagik Mkrtchyan (+102 kg) will take to the stage.
