Official at Armavir Penitentiary Accused of Accepting Bribes from Inmates and Acquiring Drugs

An official at the Armavir Penitentiary has been charged with accepting bribes from inmates and facilitating the acquisition of illegal drugs. This information was reported by the press service of the Anti-Corruption Committee.

It has been determined that in January 2022, inmates P. T. and V. G. offered the aforementioned official, A. G., sums of 50,000 and 80,000 Armenian drams, respectively, to procure prohibited mobile phones from individuals they specified and deliver them within the penitentiary. A. G. accepted the offer and met with the indicated individuals, collecting the phones and the money.

Additionally, the investigation has established that A. G. also agreed to transport drugs into the Armavir Penitentiary in exchange for a bribe, intending to deliver them to an inmate. On January 10, 2022, A. G. received a significant amount of marijuana and 50,000 drams from the designated individuals and concealed the phones and the drug packet in the pocket of his uniform while making arrangements to fulfill his obligations.

However, before entering the Armavir Penitentiary, A. G. was subjected to a personal search by the institution's operational department staff, during which the mobile phones and the drugs were discovered.

A. G. has been charged under Part 2 of Article 311 of the former Criminal Code of the Republic of Armenia (accepting a bribe by a public official for an obvious illegal act or inaction in favor of the briber or the person represented by the briber) and Part 2 of Articles 38-34-268 (facilitating the illegal acquisition of drugs). Inmates V. G. and P. T. have been charged under Part 1 of Article 312 of the former Criminal Code (giving a bribe to a public official).

The preliminary investigation in this criminal case has been completed, and the materials have been submitted to the supervising prosecutor with a request to forward them to the court.
