The Ministry of Internal Affairs Provides Clarification on Earthquakes
The Ministry of Internal Affairs has released a clarification stating: "Recently, there have been publications in mass media regarding earthquakes occurring in our region. We inform that the collection and dissemination of information at the Ministry of Internal Affairs' 'Seismic Protection Territorial Service' is carried out according to established procedures. Earthquakes occurring in the Republic of Armenia or nearby areas are reported if they are felt by the population of the Republic of Armenia. If necessary, the information regarding the felt earthquakes is confirmed through the National Crisis Management Center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
The Armenian highlands are located in the Alpine-Himalayan seismically active zone, at the collision zone of the Arabian and Eurasian plates, where seismic events are characteristic. A significant number of the earthquakes that occur are recorded by instruments and are not felt by the population.
We inform that the 'Seismic Protection Territorial Service' cooperates with the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) and provides information as per regulations that is accessible to everyone. It should also be noted that within the framework of cooperation with EMSC, the LastQuake mobile application has been translated into Armenian, allowing users to receive information about occurred earthquakes as well as leave feedback/comments after experiencing a seismic event.
It is important to follow official announcements regarding earthquakes that occur in Armenia. Regarding the publications about the earthquake recorded on July 3 in Armenia, we note that the main parameters of the earthquake, which occurred 39 kilometers north of the city of Gyumri at 04:19 local time, have also been provided by the Ministry of Internal Affairs' 'Seismic Protection Territorial Service' as follows:
