Remains of Alleged Victims of ‘Titan’ Submersible Found by US Coast Guard

The US Coast Guard has identified and retrieved alleged remains of victims from the ocean floor near the site of the tragedy, along with debris from the ‘Titan’ submersible. According to the agency's press release, "US medical personnel will conduct an official analysis of the human remains that have been carefully extracted from the scene."

Jason Neubauer, head of the Marine Board of Investigation (MBI), thanked the members of the search operation for their assistance and support, stating that "the evidence will allow investigators from various international jurisdictions to critically examine the causes of this tragedy." He noted that "significant work remains to be done to understand the factors that led to the catastrophic loss of Titan and to help ensure that such a tragedy does not happen again."

Reports indicate that debris from the submersible has been offloaded at the port of St. John’s in Newfoundland and Labrador, which had been en route to a mission to the sunken Titanic when it encountered difficulties. The MBI will continue to collect evidence and interview witnesses to keep the public informed about the proceedings regarding this tragedy, as stated in the press release.

On June 19, it was reported that the submersible, carrying five people, went missing during an expedition in the Atlantic Ocean. On June 22, the US Coast Guard announced that search team members found debris from the underwater device, indicating that an explosion likely occurred within the submersible. It is presumed that this event caused the deaths of those onboard.

Search efforts have involved both American and Canadian ships and aircraft, as well as the Polar Prince support vessel from which it launched. Additionally, a ship from the French Institute for Ocean Development has joined the rescue operations.

The Titanic sank on April 15, 1912, after hitting an iceberg while traveling from Southampton to New York, resulting in the deaths of approximately 1,500 people.
