Iran to Appear Before International Court of Justice Over Downing of Ukrainian Passenger Plane
Ukraine has filed a lawsuit against Iran in the UN court over the downing of a passenger plane in 2020. This was mentioned in a statement from the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry.
“We will continue our joint efforts to hold Iran accountable,” the statement reads.
It is worth noting that Canada, Sweden, and the United Kingdom have also approached the International Court of Justice regarding the downed Ukrainian aircraft.
The countries issued a joint statement, emphasizing their commitment to continue efforts to hold Iran “legally accountable for the downing of flight Ps752 and the killing of 176 people, raising this issue at the International Court of Justice.”
Six months ago, these countries called on Iran to agree to mandatory arbitration under the UN convention designed to protect commercial aircraft from attacks.
The coordinating group stated that since Iran disagrees with this demand, the matter will be forwarded to the International Court of Justice as soon as possible.
On January 8, 2020, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) shot down a plane belonging to “Ukrainian Airlines” just minutes after takeoff, resulting in the deaths of all 176 individuals on board. Iran later declared that the plane was mistakenly shot down.
