Sotk Open-Pit Mine Resources Depleted, Says Deputy Minister
The area of the Sotk mine that is subject to exploitation has been determined by scientists, partners, geologists, and mining experts to be better operated using a closed method. This was stated by the Deputy Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure, Hovhannes Harutyunyan, during a roundtable discussion on sector strategy with representatives from the mining industry.
"The resources available in the open section are nearing depletion, and we need to exploit another area where the method of extraction will change," he noted.
According to the Deputy Minister, after the transition to closed mining, many employees will require alternative employment, as more workers are involved in open-pit mining compared to underground operations. "The government is continuously negotiating with the organization. We are also trying the various methods they propose for relocating these employees. Some workers will retire, while others will find jobs in other mining companies, as it is no secret that this sector also needs specialists. There are no individuals with good qualifications and experience left without work in this field. Once it becomes clear how many employees will remain unemployed, the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs will also implement its programs, which will include support for them," Harutyunyan added.
