Putin has compared current events to those of 1917, recalling that mutinies within the army led to Russia's defeat in World War I, territorial losses, and civil war.

“Decisive actions will be taken; they will be severe. The authorities will not allow a repeat of the division in Russia; we will defend the people,” said Vladimir Putin.
