Sergo Yeritsyan, Former Minister of Education and Journalist, Passes Away at 66
Sergo Yeritsyan, a prominent public figure and journalist, has passed away at the age of 66 in the United States after a prolonged battle with a severe illness, as announced on Facebook by Hakob Asatryan, editor-in-chief of the Prague-based "Orer" magazine.
"In recent years, the illness had confined him to bed. Treatments that began in Yerevan and continued in Moscow and Los Angeles unfortunately did not yield positive results. Our elder friend, who celebrated his 66th birthday just two weeks ago, fought the relentless disease until his last breath, with a hopeful confidence of overcoming it, but perhaps he faced the greatest defeat of his life," wrote Asatryan.
Sergo Yeritsyan was born on June 11, 1957, in the village of Chochkan in the Alaverdi region. He served as a member of the National Assembly of Armenia from 1996 to 2003, was the Minister of Education and Science from 2003 to 2006, and acted as an advisor to the President of Armenia from 2006 to 2008. Since 2010, he had been leading the state language inspection in the Ministry of Education and Science of Armenia.
Yeritsyan was also the author of numerous articles, books, television programs, and films. He is survived by a daughter and a son.
