I Felt Deep Down What Happened: Titanic Director on Submarine Disaster
The director of the film Titanic, James Cameron, who has dived multiple times in a bathyscaphe to great depths, stated in an interview with BBC that he immediately thought of the worst-case scenario right after the disappearance of the Titan submarine.
Cameron also revealed that the company operating the submarine, OceanGate, had been warned about potential dangers. Cameron, who has descended to the wreck site of the Titanic 33 times, notes that he was aware of the unfolding events from the very beginning.
"I felt deep down what happened. If the submarine's electronics failed, the communication system went offline, and simultaneously, the positioning transmitter was out, then the submarine is lost," Cameron said.
Cameron immediately thought that the submarine had been crushed by the immense pressure of the water. According to Cameron, there is a "terrible irony" in the destruction of the Titan submarine, which had descended to witness the tragedy of the Titanic. Previously, the director had stated in television interviews that the captain of the Titanic had been warned multiple times about the dangers of icebergs, but he ignored those warnings.
Now, as the director claims, history has repeated itself, as OceanGate, which owned the Titan, was warned that the submarine was "heading for disaster." "Now we have another accident, unfortunately, due to the same mistake of ignoring warnings," Cameron stated.
In a blog post in 2019, the company noted that the design of the Titan was outside the conventional system, but this "does not mean that OceanGate does not meet the standards where they apply."
It is reported that the youngest passenger on the submarine did not want to embark on the risky trip.
Notably, The Wall Street Journal had previously reported, citing officials involved in the search operations, that the U.S. Navy recorded the sound of the bathyscaphe's hull collapsing immediately after submersion. There were five people on the sunken submarine.
