Dozens of Cases of Pegasus Spyware Infections Detected Again in Armenia - Papyan

Dozens of people in Armenia have once again received notifications about becoming targets of a state-level hacking attack. Analysis has revealed that these are cases of infection by the Pegasus spyware. The information was shared with Sputnik Armenia by media expert Artur Papyan.

Yesterday, Papyan reported on his Facebook page that several citizens had contacted the Cyberhub.am team to indicate they had received notifications from Apple regarding a hacking attack.

"We have already conducted analyses on several cases, checked diagnostic files, and the findings are cases of infection by the Pegasus spyware. The identified cases are not currently active infections but are from previous events. Typically, it takes some time before Apple notices that an action has been performed on the phone, and by the time they analyze it and issue a notification, time passes," said Papyan.

According to him, these cases are related to the 44-day war and the period immediately following it.

“Based on our preliminary assessments, the spyware is used by the Azerbaijani side, but it cannot be ruled out that the authorities of the Republic of Armenia may have used it as well,” the media expert said.

He reiterated that ordinary citizens are not infected by the Pegasus spyware. In all identified cases, the phone owners are journalists, political figures, public officials, or their close associates. “Every single infection is very expensive, costing tens of thousands of dollars, and the Azerbaijani side utilizes them in a highly targeted manner,” he said.

The media expert noted that Pegasus infections pertain to those who own an iPhone. There is no information on the number of infections among Android phone users, as unlike iPhone users, these individuals do not receive notifications.
