Export of Scrap and Waste of Ferrous and Non-Ferrous Metals Prohibited
The government has adopted a decision on the "Temporary Ban on the Export of Certain Goods from the Republic of Armenia to the Countries of the Eurasian Economic Union and to Third Countries." According to this decision, a six-month ban is proposed on the export of specified goods from July 28, 2023, until January 28, 2024.
This measure is aimed at regulating the export of scrap and waste of ferrous and non-ferrous metals, developing local production and ensuring raw material availability, as well as stimulating the activities of the Armenian processing industry through new investments.
Based on a decision made by the Armenian government in 2022, a temporary ban was imposed for six months on the export of scrap and waste of ferrous and non-ferrous metals, as well as on the export of certain used items made from these metals that have lost their suitability for use as primary goods.
According to forecasts, total investments to create and expand production based on the recycling of secondary raw materials will reach up to $150 million, resulting in the creation of 750 to 1,000 new jobs. This will lead to a 70-75% increase in the use of local scrap for ferrous and non-ferrous metals, ultimately reaching an annual consumption of around 350,000 tons of scrap.
