Lawyers to Hold One-Day Strike
On June 21, 2023, a meeting of the lawyers' club took place, where the attending lawyers expressed their concerns regarding instances of violence against lawyers. This was reported by the lawyers' chamber.
The lawyers present noted the indifference of the competent authorities and relevant international organizations towards the legal profession. They also observed that proceedings concerning lawyers who have been subjected to violence are not being conducted with sufficient speed, while the perpetrators continue to remain unpunished.
There is also a clear inaction from the police, as the officers who used violence against lawyer Karen Alaverdyan continue to serve in their positions to this day.
Reaffirming their demands, the lawyers decided to hold a one-day protest action on June 26, 2023, during which they will refrain from providing defense or representation in state bodies of the Republic of Armenia (including courts and investigative bodies).
Note 1: June 26 is the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture.
Note 2: The purpose of this struggle is to ensure clients' rights to a fair trial, as a pressured lawyer cannot effectively defend the interests of their clients.
Note 3: Shortly after the protest action on June 26, a meeting of the club will be convened to discuss the schedule and conditions for the next three-day protest action.
