Human Rights Defender Ruben Melikyan Comments on Incident on Saryan Street

A person in police uniform and performing duties is, figuratively speaking, "imprisoned" by behavioral restrictions enshrined in law. This was stated by human rights defender Ruben Melikyan on his Facebook page, addressing the incident that occurred on Saryan Street.

"A regular citizen may be 'morally right' by knocking down someone who insults him, but a police officer never can. This is what constitutional law demands. This is what the political authority is obliged to ensure. If we oppose 'these rules of the game,' we simply need to change them. By the way, perhaps that is the right thing to do. But as long as they remain unchanged, any justification for police force against a non-threatening individual can be perceived as a 'green light.' Moreover, to those who claim to be 'not engaged in politics' yet are offended by the actions of the beret-clad personnel, let me inform you that, for instance, around this time last year, there was an incident involving an opposition member whose arm was broken by a beret officer, which was clearly recorded on video, yet no charges have been filed against them to this day. Could you be a bit more outraged by that fact? Or is it just the beating of intoxicated individuals, treated like hooligans, and the actions of those 'not engaged in politics' that are unacceptable?" he wrote.
