We Have the Experience of November 9 and Will Not Repeat the Same Mistakes - Simonyan
During a press briefing with journalists, National Assembly President Alen Simonyan addressed the dialogue between Baku and Stepanakert and the institution of a guarantor.
“It is important that we have a guarantor after the peace treaty. We see that we have the November 9 document, the points of which have been somewhat violated, and the state that is a guarantor has not responded adequately. We must reach a point where Azerbaijan talks about the Baku-Stepanakert dialogue because otherwise, the situation will not be advantageous for Azerbaijan itself. I am confident that Aliyev has significant problems internally. He needs to create an external enemy; he has begun to use rhetoric against Iran,” said Simonyan.
“If Baku-Stepanakert dialogue does not take place, the issue will not be resolved; the alternative is genocide, which we will certainly not allow to occur. The authorities of Azerbaijan must understand that this issue is much more important for them than for us,” Simonyan added.
He noted that all centers where negotiations are taking place are ready to become guarantors, and it is important that the guarantor is committed to ensuring the agreements are upheld.
“It is crucial that there is a guarantor who will be committed to the agreement reached. We see the November 9 statement, its enforcement does not satisfy me personally, and I am sure it does not satisfy the people of Armenia as well,” Simonyan stated. “We have the experience of November 9, and we will not repeat the same mistakes. I do not mean anyone in particular; the mechanisms of guarantees must be more clearly defined. Both the European Union and the USA and Russia are ready to be guarantors of the peace treaty, but we must choose mechanisms that are as strong as possible,” concluded Alen Simonyan.
