The US Must Respond Appropriately to Aliyev's Statements, Armenian MFA
The Armenian side has always welcomed the efforts made by the US to establish peace, stability, and security in the South Caucasus. This was stated by the Armenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, commenting on the press statement made by the US State Department spokesperson on May 30.
“We believe that it should be obvious to all our partners that the recognition of each other's territorial integrity and inviolability of borders based on the Alma-Ata Declaration, as well as addressing the rights and security of the people of Nagorno-Karabakh, are key in the process of normalizing relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan. As emphasized by the Armenian MFA in its statement on May 29, the recognition of Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity cannot be interpreted as a mandate for ethnic cleansing and self-determination against the people of Nagorno-Karabakh,” the Armenian MFA stated.
“It is impossible to overlook that the statements made by the President of Azerbaijan on May 28 not only did not propose dignified solutions to the aforementioned issues but also contained clear threats to the sovereignty and independence of the Republic of Armenia, as well as to the right of the people of Nagorno-Karabakh to live safely and with dignity in their homeland, about which the Armenian side has repeatedly warned. We believe that the United States, based on the values of democracy and human rights protection it professes, and its commitment and engagement in establishing long-term peace in the region, should respond appropriately to these statements to prevent the Azerbaijani leadership's expansionist policies toward the sovereign territory of the Republic of Armenia and its intentions for ethnic cleansing in Nagorno-Karabakh,” the statement from the Armenian MFA concludes.
