The Agreement Between Baku and Yerevan Must Be Based on Long-Term, Sustainable Solutions, Says Russian Foreign Ministry

The peace agreement between Yerevan and Baku should be based on long-term, sustainable decisions, and both the Azerbaijani and Armenian sides must determine what aligns with their fundamental interests and how they intend to ensure lasting peace. This was stated by Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin in an interview with RIA Novosti.

Responding to a question about the preparation of a peace treaty between the parties, he noted that given the extreme sensitivity of these issues, they cannot comment on the negotiation process in order not to hinder its progress.

“Baku and Yerevan themselves decide what aligns with their fundamental interests and how they intend to ensure stable and reliable peace for their peoples. It is clear that the peace treaty must be based on long-term, sustainable solutions,” the Russian deputy foreign minister added.

He recalled that “Russia is providing all possible support to the peace process between Azerbaijan and Armenia.” “The trilateral statement made by the leaders at the summit held in Sochi on October 31, 2022, highlights the importance of actively preparing for the signing of the peace treaty to achieve sustainable and long-term peace in the region,” Galuzin noted.

Galuzin is confident that “this joint work should be viewed in the context of implementing the complex of trilateral agreements reached by the leaders of Russia, Azerbaijan, and Armenia since November 2020.”

“These are foundational to the Armenian-Azerbaijani resolution process and shape the 'roadmap' for the reconciliation of Baku and Yerevan. It includes steps to unblock transport and economic ties, demarcate the Armenian-Azerbaijani border, and develop civil society interactions,” he mentioned.

Returning to the topic of the peace treaty, he indicated that the Russian side is helping the parties find points of contact and reach beneficial formulations and compromises.
