Launch of Alternative Maritime Route at Upper Lars
The launch of cargo transportation via the alternative maritime route from Batumi to Novorossiysk has been initiated. The information was provided by the Ministry of Economy of the Republic of Armenia.
“A trial maritime transport of containerized goods has already been carried out, during which no significant issues arose,” the statement said.
According to the ministry, it is currently planned to carry out one cargo transportation per week. In the future, depending on demand, the number of shipments may increase.
The government intends to subsidize the maritime segment of the cargo transportation.
It should be noted that Armenian authorities had planned to start regular ferry services between the Georgian Black Sea port of Poti and the Russian port of Kavkaz via the Sea of Azov (Krasnodar Krai) last summer. This route is designed to serve as an alternative to transport across the Upper Lars border crossing between Russia and Georgia.
